Positive dog training

Reinforced or rewarded behaviour in a dog is more likely to be reapeated, and behaviours that are not reinforced will become less likely to occur again.
This basically takes advantage of the fact that dogs learn by the immediate consequence of their actions.

For example if you throw a tasty treat to your dog every time he sits down, the chances are he will spend more time sitting on his bum.

That same principle applies when wanting to reduce a behaviour by ignoring it. It is surprising that it wont take to long for the dog to click onto "not" being rewarded thus reducing the behaviour and making it fade away.

One of the most common problem is recalling you the dog when of lead. First try getting a long line, which can be bought in most pet stores or get a long piece of rope and tie onto your lead handle. This gives the dog some freedom while still under controle. Call the dog back to you with a nice tone of voice. When they come give loads of praise and a treat. This will make it a positive behaviour for the dog to do. Even use a whistle to get the dogs attention, then call it over again.

If the dog is of leash, call it over and put back on. Walk for a couple of minutes then let back off to play. Repeat this and the dog will get used to having the lead put back on. Not knowing if that if the end of the playing.

NEVER give the dog in trouble once they come back to you, even if it has taken a while for them to come back.
